How Often Does Your Austin Pool Need to Be Shocked?

As a pool owner, you should be on top of keeping the water properly balanced so it’s safe to swim in. But sometimes it might be necessary to shock your pool water for various reasons.

Here are a few situations when shocking your pool water might be necessary.

After a Storm

If your area experiences heavy rain, windstorms, and extreme heat conditions, your pool water may need to be shocked. Check the chemical levels after these times to see where they’re at. Odds are, they may be thrown off balance and your pool water will need to be shocked.

When You Notice Algae Growth

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, algae can grow a little too quickly. In this case, you’ll need to take action to stop its continued growth and get rid of it before you jump back into the water.

Green algae is more common, but you may also notice black, brown, or pink algae as well. In addition to shocking your pool, you may also want to use algaecide too.

After a Pool Party

After many people have been in the pool for an extended period of time, it may be appropriate to shock the pool. Humans can add all types of contaminants into the pool, such as sunblock, sweat, perfumes, lotions, body oils, makeup, and other things that can throw off the water chemistry and necessitate shocking.

If you do decide to shock your pool, consider doing it at night. Considering how hot and sunny it gets in Austin, the chlorine in the water could evaporate much faster. When you add the shock in the evening hours, you won’t have to worry about the sunlight and heat so much, which will allow the chlorine to stay active without being dissipated by the sun.

What if the Pool is Saltwater?

Not only is shocking a saltwater pool fine, but it is important to the health of your pool water. Every so often, it may be necessary to shock your pool to make sure the water is clean and void of harmful bacteria and algae. Shocking the pool will eliminate this organic matter and leave your pool water clean and ready for swimming.
