A small backyard shouldn’t deter you from installing a swimming pool. In fact, most small yards can accommodate a pool of some sort. The trick is to ensure it’s configured properly to accommodate the tight space in your backyard.

Here are a few pool options for a small outdoor space.

Rectangular Pools

A rectangular swimming pool is a classic shape, as it tends to fit nicely with a variety of backyard sizes and shapes. Rectangular pools have clean, crisp edges, and allow for the perfect space to swim laps. You can go as small as a 9′ by 18′ pool to give you just enough space to lounge in your pool.

While you may not be able to swim laps in a pool of this size, it still provides you with a fun and refreshing component to your yard for you and your family to enjoy.

Narrow Pools

Still rectangular in shape, narrower pools are ideal in spaces that are very limited either in width or length. Whether your lot is not very deep, or your frontage is narrow but you’ve got some depth to your property, a narrow pool might work.

You may also choose to install a narrow pool in such a way as to serve as a divider for different zones. For instance, one side of the pool can be designed for entertaining and dining, while the other side can be designed for decorative water fountains and rock gardens

Half-Decks

While a full deck surrounding the pool is ideal, your pool doesn’t necessarily need one. You can get away with a deck that surrounds only half the structure to ensure you have enough space for a pool. This is especially handy if one side of the pool is close to a retaining wall, property line, or some type of landscaping.

A good option would be to install decking between your home and the pool. Surround it with some landscaping and lighting, and you can completely transform your yard.
