All family members enjoy frolicking in the pool, especially when the temperatures are especially hot and the sun’s rays are sizzling.

But humans aren’t the only ones who should get in on the action — even family pets may enjoy splashing about in the water. In fact, most dogs love swimming, both for the activity and the ability to cool off.

But even though your furry friend may love to go in the pool and you may enjoy spending time with your pet in the water, you may be wondering whether or not pools are safe for dogs. And that’s a good question to ask.

Pool safety applies not just to humans — especially young children — but also to our four-legged friends. While swimming can and should be a safe and fun activity for dogs, there are certain things that pet owners should know.

Some Dog Breeds Can’t Swim

There’s a common assumption floating around out there that all dogs know how to swim instinctively. And while that may be true for most dog breeds, it’s not the case for all. For instance, certain dog breeds — such as Corgis, Pugs, and Bulldogs — have body types that make swimming more difficult.

These breeds tend to have very short legs and box-like torsos that make staying afloat more difficult. As such, they may need a little more assistance in the pool. To stay even safer, these dogs may do well with dog life jackets.

Chlorine Concerns

Like humans, dogs do OK in the presence of chlorine, as long as it’s diluted and the pool water chemistry is balanced. That said, it’s always a good idea to rinse your dog off much like you would yourself after spending some time in the pool, unless your pool is sanitized with saltwater.

Dog Hair

If your dog sheds, it’s important to clean out the skimmer after every use. You’d be surprised at how much hair comes off your dog while he’s in the pool. And all that hair is collected in the skimmer, which will need to be emptied regularly to avoid placing too much strain on the pool’s filtration system.

Dogs love to play in the water, but be sure to create a safe swimming environment for your pooch. For all your pool needs, be sure to get in touch with your local Austin swimming pool builder today!
